Here you see a cicada emerging from its exoskeleton. Each image was captured at 1 min intervals. Once the cicada settles on a spot to undergo eclosion, the process takes about 1.5 hours to achieve wing expansion plus an additional 2 to 3 hours to develop the black color. This movie shows the first 1.6 hours until the wings have expanded but not long enough for the color change to develop. The "Eclosing cicada 2" movie shows the full 4.5 hour process.
