Departmental Awards

Applications for select fellowships and awards are currently being accepted. To apply, fill out the 2009 application and provide the necessary materials as stated on the application form. The application deadline for these awards is Friday, April 16, 2009. Recipients will be recognized at the department’s spring reception held on May 11.

Crowell (Sears) Scholarship

Established in honor of Professor Emeritus P. Sears Crowell, Jr., to allow a student to attend a summer field station, preferably marine, approved by the Department of Biology.

Eligible:

Students enrolling in an internship program or course, preferably marine, at a field station.

Award:

Two awards of $750 each.

Notes:

• Advertised earlier, but no applications were submitted. Graduate students and undergraduates may still apply for this award.
• Candidate’s application packet must include a statement detailing the applicant’s career goals, how the summer internship or course will help achieve those goals, and the expenses involved in this experience.

Heiser (Charles) Fellowship

The award honors Professor Charles Heiser. It was established in 2002 by his colleagues, friends, and former students.

Eligible:

Graduate students in plant evolution.

Award:

$1,000

Notes:

• Can be used to recruit or retain outstanding students
• Can be used as dissertation support

Holland (James) Graduate Fellowship

Not currently open for applications; awarded by invitation only.

Hoover (Louise Constable) Fellowship

Established in 1983 by departmental alum Michael H. Schatzlein, M.D., in honor of his grandmother. More...

Eligible:

Currently supports Evolution, Ecology and Behavior graduate students who are at least in their third year.

Award:

$1,000 minimum

Notes:

Currently provides summer support.

Hudock (George) Fellowship

Established in 1993 by departmental alum Fern (Hays) DeLaCroix and her husband, Clifford, to honor her mentor Dr. George Hudock for his outstanding teaching and academic counsel.

Eligible:

Department of Biology graduate students in good standing.

Award:

$1,000

Notes:

• First preference to qualified Master’s candidates.
• Second preference to students needing summer support or financial assistance for special seminars or training.

Konetzka (Walter) Fellowship

The award honors the late Professor Konetzka’s commitment to teaching and research. It was established in 1993 by his wife, Lillian, his colleagues, friends, and former students.

Eligible:

• First preference to graduate students in Microbiology with superb teaching abilities and strong research skills.
• Second preference to graduate students majoring in MCDB or Genetics if their research is in the area of Microbiology and they have the requisite teaching skills.

Award:

$2,000

Notes:

Award can be used to provide summer support for a student writing a doctoral thesis.

Taylor (Milton) Fellowship in Virology

This fellowship was created in 2000 by alum Lawrence Blatt, Ph.D., to honor his former teacher and mentor, Professor Milton Taylor.

Eligible:

• First preference given to graduate students engaged in Virology Research.
• Second preference to graduate students majoring in Microbiology.

Award:

$3,000

Notes:

Award currently only provides summer support.
