About the Company

Cook Incorporated started in the 1960s, when Bill and Gayle Cook started making wire guides, needles and catheters in one of the bedrooms of their Bloomington apartment. The company has blossomed into one of the largest producers of medical devices in the world. From 1982 - 2000, the firm sponsored an undergraduate competition open to Department of Biology students. In 2001, Cook took over funding of the Biology Undergraduate Research Award. They also help support the Indiana University James Holland Summer Enrichment Program in Biology.

Alice Chen is a senior, majoring in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. She is a member of the Hutton Honors College. Alice has been an Undergraduate Teaching Intern for our Biological Mechanisms class for four semesters.

She has been a member of Professor Cheng Kao’s research team since May 2010. Her research paper was entitled “Viral double-strand RNA-binding Proteins Can Enhance Innate Immune Signaling by Toll-Like Receptor 3.”

This fall, she will attend the IU School of Medicine. Her plans are to train as a pediatric surgeon.
