About the Alfred Parson Mower Award
Department of Biology alumna, Tracy Lawhon Parrott, earned a B.S. in Microbiology from IU in 1988 and a JD from IUPUI in 1994. With more than 20 years experience in the life science industry, Parrott left her work with large pharmaceutical firms to join a seed-stage biotech company in California, where she is Chief Pharmaceutical Development Officer for Tragara Pharmaceuticals. Sarah Keesom, 2012 Mower Recipient

Sarah Keesom is a graduate student in the Ecology, Evolution and Behavior program and a member of Laura Hurley's lab. Sarah is interested in the physiological mechanisms underlying animal communication. In the Hurley lab, Sarah studies the auditory system and ultrasonic vocalizations of mice. Along with her research, Sarah has mentored undergraduate students in the lab and taught for the introductory biology laboratory course. Sarah plans to become a biology professor at a small liberal arts college, with a strong focus on teaching.
Kimberly Long, 2012 Mower Recipient

Kimberly Long graduated in May 2012 with a B.S. in Biology with Honors, a B.A. in French, and a minor in chemistry. She was a member of the Science, Technology, and Research Scholars (STARS) Program here at IU, which enabled her to conduct four years of scientific research. Kim was a member of Greg Demas’ research team, and her work on Siberian hamsters was published in an article that appeared in General and Comparative Endocrinology. In 2011, she earned a national Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and spent a semester in France via IU’s Overseas Studies Program. Kim was on the Dean’s List every semester. She will attend UC Berkeley to earn her doctorate in neuroscience.
