Funding Information

All students admitted to the graduate program receive some form of stipend to cover living expenses during the academic year and during the summer (Teaching Assistantship, Research Assistantship, Training Grant support, Fellowship) and Fee Remission support that covers all tuition expenses and virtually all fees. In addition, the university provides student health insurance. All applicants for admission are automatically considered for financial support.

Fellowships available for students in Biology Ph.D. programs include the James P. Holland Fellowship and a variety of other University Fellowships provided by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Associate Instructorships (teaching assistantships) are available for eligible students in all Biology graduate programs. Associate Instructorships require a maximum of 20 hours teaching-related duties per week. These Associate Instructorships provide an excellent opportunity to gain teaching experience, which is a fundamental part of our graduate training. Indeed, two semesters of teaching experinece are required for completion of the Ph.D. degree. Finally, many advanced graduate students are supported as Research Assistants on the research grants of their thesis advisors.

The Department of Biology seeks a diverse student body and we encourage members of minority groups to apply. In addition to fellowship opportunities available in the Department of Biology, Indiana University provides a number of fellowships for minority applicants.
