Students enrolled in the Plant Biology Graduate Program may emphasize either molecular or organismal approaches.

  • The molecular emphasis allows for concentration in areas such as molecular and cell biology, genetics, physiology, development, plant-microbe interactions, biochemistry, and photosynthesis. Students choosing a molecular approach follow the exact procedures in all respects of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program, including opportunities for financial support.
  • The organismal emphasis provides for concentration in taxonomy and systematics, evolution, anatomy and morphology, population biology, and ecology. Students choosing an organismal approach will follow the exact procedures of the Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior Program, including opportunities for financial support.

Both the M.A. and Ph.D. are offered. Interested students should apply through either the EEB or MBG program.

Most students enter the Ph.D. track. Students interested in the M.A. as a terminal degree take a total of 30 course credit hours, stressing suitable advanced courses in plant sciences and cognate areas. At least 20 of the hours must be in the major area. A thesis or an equivalent creative project is required.

Detailed information about participating faculty can be found on the Plant Biology Faculty page.
