Service and Outreach
Getting involved with the community carries multiple benefits. Outreach activities give you practice communicating your science to the public, enhance sceince literacy in the community, provide you with material for the required "broader impacts" statement on NSF grants (be sure to let your PI know!), look great on your CV, help you form friendships beyond the department, and provide the opportunity to form connections that may lead to job opportunities.
Science Outreach
- WonderLab—volunteer in the museum, or work to develop a program or exhibit
- A Moment of Science—write or review scripts, or serve as science consultant for IU's nationally-syndicated radio series
- Sassafras Audubon Society—many Biology grads give talks to this birding group
- Sycamore Land Trust—lead a hike, weed exotic invasives, build a trail
- The Nature Conservancy—the closest opportunity is the Brown County Hills Project of the Indiana chapter.
- Holland Summer Enrichment Program (HSEP)—lecture at this IU Biology summer program for minority high school students
- Lilly Scholars Program—serve as mentor in your lab for a second-year HSEP student
