Biology Undergraduate Research Awards
Funding provided by: Cook Incorporated of Bloomington, Indiana

Eligible:

Biology, Microbiology, and Biotechnology majors enrolled in Biology L490 or its equivalent.

Award:

Up to $1000 for the best research paper written by a student, a copy of which will be presented to Cook Incorporated.

To Apply:

Submit all application materials plus a copy of a research paper written by the applicant to the Biology Advising Office (JH A115) by Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3pm.  A letter of support must be submitted separately by a Biology department faculty member.

Blatchley Nature Study Club Scholarship: Established in 1989 by the Blatchley Nature Study Club of Noblesville, Indiana.

Eligible:

Junior Biology, Microbiology, or Biotechnology majors who plan to apply to a graduate Plant Biology or Ecology and Evolutionary Biology degree program. 
Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply. 
Also open to Bloomington graduate students in Plant Biology or Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Criteria:

Serious candidates should have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, have Indiana residency status with the university (required), and have financial need. 
Recipient MUST be willing to prepare and present a program to the club at a mutually agreed upon time, usually the following spring.  (Research conducted through Biology L490 or its equivalent could provide material for this.)

Howard W. Clark Scholarship: Established by Prudence L. Clark for the purpose of encouraging scholarship in botany, soil building, and plant breeding.

Eligible:

Junior/Senior Biology, Microbiology, or Biotechnology majors interested in botany, soil building, & plant breeding.

Criteria:

GPA of 3.3 or better.

$500

Sears Crowell Scholarship: Established in honor of Professor Emeritus P. Sears Crowell, Jr., to allow a student to attend a summer field station, preferably marine, approved by the Department of Biology.

Eligible:

Any junior, senior, or graduate student in the Department of Biology.

Criteria:

Available to students enrolling in an internship program or course, preferably marine, at a field station. 

Award:

$500 for undergraduate juniors/seniors, $500 for graduate students

To Apply:

Submit all application materials, and also a statement detailing your career goals, how the summer field station will help you achieve those goals, and the expenses involved in the field station, to the Biology Advising Office (JH A115) by Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3pm.  A letter of support must be submitted separately by a Biology department faculty member.  

Carl H. Eigenmann Scholarship: Dr. Eigenmann was a distinguished researcher of fishes and evolution, Chairman of the Zoology Department, and Dean of the Graduate School. This endowment is a bequest of his daughter, Adel R. Eiler.

Eligible:

Any Biology, Microbiology, and Biotechnology major interested in zoological or other biological research.

Criteria:

GPA above 3.3.  Sincere interest in biology; research, academic, or professional application is essential.

Arlene Ferguson Internship at Hilltop Gardens: Established in 1990 by Mr. Stephen L. Ferguson, a local Bloomington attorney, in memory of his mother.

Eligible:

Those with a demonstrated interest in botany. 

Criteria:

Must be of at least sophomore standing and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.  Graduating seniors may not apply.

Award:

$500.  Recipient serves an internship at Hilltop Gardens for 5-8 hours each week during the Spring 2009 semester, under the guidance of Hilltop's director, who will assist in the selection process.  The recipient must be enrolled in the Spring 2009 semester at IU Bloomington.

Fox Glen Research & Education Fund: Established with the support of John Sinclair to encourage effective undergraduate participation in research. This award is based on scientific merit and is unrelated to need and GPA.

Eligible:

Biology, Microbiology, and Biotechnology majors engaged in undergraduate research through Biology L490 or its equivalent.

Criteria:

At least 1 previous semester of L490 or its equivalent.  Applicant must submit a research paper (written by the applicant) in the form of a publishable manuscript.  (Paper must define a hypothesis; describe why this is important; propose an experimental test of the hypothesis; carry out the experiment and interpret the results and impact of the evaluation of the hypothesis; and finally, propose future work.)

Rex Grossman Award: Dr. Daniel Grossman is an alumnus and respected local ophthalmologist.  He takes special interest in this scholarship established in his father's memory.    Premedical or preoptometry study and financial need are strong criteria.

Eligible:

Graduating senior Biology, Microbiology, or Biotechnology majors accepted to medical or optometry school.  Students must be enrolled during the Spring 2008 semester.

Criteria:

High GPA, financial need, demonstrated good citizenship.

Up to $1000

Submit all application materials to the Development Office, Jordan Hall 120 by Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3pm.  Indicate in your personal statement whether you have been accepted to medical school or optometry school. 
A letter of support must be submitted separately by a Biology department faculty member.   [NOTE: if you are applying for other scholarships, you may submit application materials to the Advising Office, and the Advising Office will copy and send the materials to JH 120.]

L.S. McClung Scholarship in Microbiology: Established in 1987 by Cornelius F. Sterling (BA Bacteriology, 1942) to honor Dr. McClung.

Eligible:

Microbiology majors who are Indiana residents (required) as defined by Indiana University, and who, upon graduation, will work in the field of Microbiology or plan to pursue a graduate degree in that field.

Criteria:

Overall GPA of 2.00 or greater; science GPA of 3.00 or greater.  Student must be enrolled at IUB in Fall 2008 and have Indiana residency.  Graduating seniors and non-Indiana residents are not eligible.

Microbiology Undergraduate Summer Research Program: Established by Professor Emeritus L. S. McClung and his friends in 1989. This award provides funding to a Microbiology student performing L490 or its equivalent research on the Bloomington campus during Summer Session 2008.

Eligible:

Microbiology students performing at least one hour of L490 or its equivalent research on the Bloomington campus during Summer Session 2008.

Criteria:

First preference given to recipients of the L. S. McClung Scholarship; other highly qualified Microbiology students are also eligible.  Award recipient must write a paper in the form of a publishable manuscript. (Paper must define a hypothesis; describe why this is important; propose an experimental test of the hypothesis; carry out the experiment and interpret the results and impact of the evaluation of the hypothesis; and finally, propose future work.)

Submit all application materials and a brief description of your research to the Biology Advising Office (JH A115) by Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3pm.  The faculty member with whom you work should separately submit a letter evaluating your research.

Fernandus and Elizabeth Payne Scholarship: Established several years ago by one of our most distinguished colleagues, Dr. Fernandus Payne, who served as Dean of the Graduate School and for many years as Chairman of the Zoology Department.

Eligible:

Biology, Microbiology, and Biotechnology majors approaching their junior or senior year.  Graduating seniors are not eligible.  Students must be enrolled full-time (12+ hours per semester) during the semester they receive the award funds.

Criteria:

Serious nominees should have a 3.5 GPA and financial need.  First consideration is given to those pursuing teaching or research careers.  Evidence of research commitment is an important consideration.
