THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR MICROBIOLOGY
Founded in 1899, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is the oldest and largest single biological sciences membership organization in the world.
With a membership of 45,000 individuals, the Society promotes the microbiological sciences and their application for the common good.
The Society and its members have a responsibility to ensure that the benefits of microbiological research and discovery are used to preserve and enhance human welfare.
The Society accomplishes its mission by disseminating information, stimulating research, promoting education and advancing the profession. ASM's headquarters is located in Washington, D.C.

ASM UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
THE PROGRAM
This fellowship encourages students to pursue careers or advanced degrees in the microbiological sciences by providing an opportunity to participate in a research project at their institution and gain experience in presenting their results. The fellowship allows students to conduct research in the summer with an ASM member faculty mentor and present the results at the ASM General Meeting the following year.
ELIGIBILITY
The program requires a joint applicationfrom both the student applicant and a faculty member who is an ASM member.Students eligible for the fellowship must:
- Be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate student during the academic year;
- Be involved in a research project;
- Have an ASM member at their institution willing to serve as the mentor;
- Not receive financial support for research (i.e., Council for Undergraduate Research, Minority Access to Research Careers, Sigma Xi) during the fellowship; and
- Not have received two previous Undergraduate Research Fellowship Awards.
Eligible faculty mentors must:
- Be ASM members; and
- Have an ongoing research project.
AWARD
The Undergraduate Research Fellowship provides:
- Up to $2,500 for student stipend;
- Up to $600 for supplies;
- A one-year ASM student membership; and
- Up to $900 travel support to attend the ASM General Meeting.
Funds for the Undergraduate Research Fellowship are provided by the American Society for Microbiology.
LENGTH OF PROGRAM
- The length of the program is three to six months.

ASM MINORITY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
THE PROGRAM
This fellowship encourages minority students to pursue careers or advanced degrees in the biological and microbiological sciences. The program provides an opportunity for students to participate in research projects at selected institutions and gain experience presenting the results of their research at a national or regional meeting.
ELIGIBILITY
Students eligible for the fellowship must:
- Be Black/African American, Mexican American, Native American, Puerto Rican, Alaskan Native American or Pacific Islander;
- Be enrolled as a full-time matriculating undergraduate student;
- Major in biological or microbiological sciences;
- Be involved in a research experience or an independent project; and
- Be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent visa status.
AWARD
The Minority Undergraduate Reseach Fellowship provides:
- $2,500 for studend stipend;
- Up to $650 for round trip travel to the institution;
- Up to $850 for lodging;
- Up to $500 for supplies;
- One year ASM Student membership; and
- Travel support to attend the ASM General Meeting.
Funds for the Minority Undergraduate Research Fellowship are provided by the American Society for Microbiology
