I study the regulation of Vitamin B 12 (cobalamin) biosynthesis in Rhodobacter capsulatus . Tetrapyrrole synthesis in R. capsulatus is especially complex since it must coordinate the synthesis of cobalamin and heme with fluctuating levels of bacteriochlorophyll. We are trying to gain a better understanding of how this coordination is achieved and what are the major regulators. I am also working on a B 12 binding protein, AerR. The gene aerR is located within the photosynthesis gene cluster and has been showed to regulate bchC gene. How this protein links the level of B 12 to the regulation of bch genes is being studied.
