Views of IU Students about Possible Main Roles, for Society, of Liberal Education (e.g., of education supported by the IU College of Arts and Sciences)

This survey was conducted near the end of the spring, 2004 semester. (A copy of the questionnaire that was used in this survey can be found at The Questionnaire .) IU students who were enrolled in at least one Biology course that semester could participate. The responses of 413 students were used, even though not all of these students responded to all items in the survey. An additional 34 students filled out the questionnaire, but they did so using unconventional ranking scales (e.g., using a scale of 1-2 rather than the requested scale of 1-16), and so their responses were not included in the final tabulation.

The results of this survey are presented below using: a) a bar chart that shows the number of students who gave each rank number for each possible role and b) a table that gives the median rank value for each possible role.

The bar chart:

In this chart, the different possible roles of education that students were asked to consider are indicated by the letters A-P (a total of sixteeen roles). Each of these roles is described in the table that's below this bar chart. These roles can also be found at The Questionnaire .

For each possible role, there are 16 bar segments, with each bar segment corresponding to a different ranking (i.e., corresponding to rankings 1-16). The bar segments that represent ranks 1-4 (i.e., the first four bar segments in each row) are shown in different shades of red; the bar segments that represent ranks 13-16 (i.e., the final four bar segments in each row) are shown in different shades of gray; and the bar segments that represent ranks 5-12 are all shown in white.

The length of each bar segment corresponds to the number of students who gave that particular rank number. Numbers shown in the largest bar segments indicate the numbers of students who chose those particular ranks (e.g., indicating that 104 students gave a rank of "1" to role B).
