Research focus: I am beginning a double major in Biology and Spanish. In the Montooth lab, I am studying the effects of mitochondrial mutations on male fertility in Drosophila melanogaster. Along the way I am learning valuable molecular techniques that will hopefully help me to continue in genetic research in an M.D. or PhD program.

Research focus: I am studying the effects of sperm competition among different mitochondrial introgression lines of Drosophila melanogaster. I am also gaining valuable laboratory experience and molecular skills that will hopefully help me in a pursuit of a medical degree.

Research focus: As a biology student, working in the Montooth lab has helped me gain laboratory experience and learn skills needed for graduate school and then a career in science. In the lab, I am learning about various disciplines of Drosophila melanogaster genetics and am particularly interested in the ecological and environmental factors affecting the genetics of Drosophila melanogaster.

Research focus: I am a junior majoring in English and Spanish. In the Montooth Lab, I am working on cold tolerance and the effects of thermal stress in Drosophila. Studying evolutionary biology continues to help hone my skills for a career in medicine or science.

Research focus: As a sophomore, dual-degree student (biology, math) at Indiana University, I am exposing myself to as many different academic experiences as possible. Among these, the most significant has been my involvement in the Montooth Lab. My current project is a deficiency mapping experiment where we are trying to identify the gene(s) which cause a significant developmental delay in our mitochondrial introgression lines. I am also working with Luke Hoekstra in studying the cost of phenotypic expression of HSP70 during heatshock. I am looking forward to some of the rigorous data analysis that we will encounter as well as to studying the theoretical frameworks from which our lab experiments will be developed.

Research focus: I am using enzymatic assays to characterize the metabolic fitness of mito-nuclear introgression genotypes of D. melanogaster and other closely related species that may have experienced mitochondrial introgression in the wild.
