The Chronology and History of the Media Lab
1940 |
Leland S. McClung was appointed to the IU faculty and organized the microbiology program. He introduced a full bacteriology curriculum (Young F.N., 1983). There was no space in the Biology Building for bacteriology so facilities for bacteriology were located on 3 rooms of the West side of the 3rd floor of the Chemistry Department. One of these rooms was used for the 1st laboratory session (24 student stations) and within this room there were 4 smaller rooms, one of them used as a Media Kitchen, complete with autoclave, Arnold sterilizer and a small mechanical dishwasher (McClung-micro, 1981). |
1945 |
Helen Ruggles Arthur was appointed as Media Technician. She helped with the bacteriology quarters in Kirkwood and Jordan (now Biology). She provided extraordinary service to all courses and research programs (McClung-micro, 1981). |
1946 |
Bacteriology was established as a separate department under the direction of Leland S. McClung (Young F.N., 1983). The space in the Chemistry Department became small for the Bacteriology Department. The attic 4th floor in Kirkwood Hall was accommodated for them and a small room at the corner of the teaching laboratory served as the Media Kitchen, with the autoclaves in the student laboratory (McClung-micro, 1981). |
1955 |
A new building for Biology, Jordan Hall, was ready for occupation. The plans included the current Media Lab, which was called the Central Media Kitchen (Jordan Hall Brochure, 1955). |
1963 |
The Division of Biological Sciences was instituted with Tracy Sonneborn as acting director. The Bacteriology, Botany and Zoology Departments still retained autonomy and awarded degrees, but the Division became responsible for curricula, graduate fellowships, promotions and tenure, common facilities, and new faculty appointments (Green S. and Konetzka W, 1983). |
1977 |
Abandonment of the divisional organization and integration of all the departments except Anatomy and Physiology in a single department, the Department of Biology (Young F.N., 1983) |
