Malacinski Scholarship

2026 Malacinski Scholar: Adam Su Salazar

“I'm an undergraduate researcher in Dr. James A. Marrs's lab where zebrafish are modeled to see how prenatal alcohol exposure causes birth defects. While pursuing this research, I plan to keep up my studies of potentially double majoring neuroscience with biology. I plan to join more labs involved with the cognitive function of the brain, and am interested in studying abroad in Australia for biology and hope to see the medical side of a foreign country to expand my knowledge of the medical field. I actively participate advocating for Asian Americans through Asian American Association, and am planning to join as an executive.”

2025 Malacinski Scholar: Lucia Caluseriu

Lucia is an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Cris Ledón-Rettig’s lab, where she investigates morphological brain plasticity in Spea tadpoles. In addition to her research in biology, she is pursuing a second major in Germanic Studies to support her goal of engaging in international research opportunities. Lucia plans to study abroad in Germany to build connections within the global research community. A dedicated and collaborative student, she also demonstrates leadership and commitment outside the classroom as a member of the Division I IU Women’s Rugby team. In the future, Lucia intends to pursue a Ph.D. in biological and environmental sciences.

2024 Malacinski Scholar: Odessa Lyon

Odessa is working on a semi-independent research project with Dr. Erik Ragsdale in his lab, focusing on the microevolution of molecular mechanisms for developmental plasticity in Pristionchus nematodes. She also works as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Ragsdale Lab and has been a UTA for the Phage Hunters ASURE Lab. Odessa intends to pursue a master’s degree in conservation biology and/or science writing.

2024 Malacinski Scholar: Isabelle Mildor

With the George M. Malacinski Biology Scholarship, Isabelle will be able to continue her education at IU and graduate with both a bachelor's and accelerated master's degree in biotechnology. This year she will continue her teaching internship under Professor Arnold in chemistry where she can connect with other students while strengthening her academic abilities. Isabelle will also continue to be in strong standing with the biology club while supporting her department through research in years to come.
